Chandrashekhar Azad, also known as Ravan, is an Indian social activist, Ambedkarite activist, and lawyer. He is the co-founder and president of Bhim Army, a Dalit rights organization in India.
Azad was born in Dhadkuli village in Saharanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. He studied law at Meerut University and worked as a lawyer before founding the Bhim Army in 2014. The Bhim Army works to protect the rights of Dalits, a historically marginalized community in India, and to promote education and social justice.

Azad has been arrested several times for his activism, including in 2017 for his role in the Saharanpur caste violence. He has also been criticized for his inflammatory rhetoric. However, he remains a popular figure among Dalits and other marginalized communities in India.
In 2020, Azad launched a new political party, the Azad Samaj Party. The party's platform is based on the principles of social justice and equality for all.

Azad was born on December 3, 1986, in Dhadkuli village in Saharanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. He was born into a Dalit family, and his father worked as a farmer. Azad was a bright student, and he excelled in his studies. He attended a government school in his village, and he later went on to study law at Meerut University.

Azad became involved in activism at a young age. He was inspired by the work of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the leader of the Dalit movement in India. Azad began to participate in protests and demonstrations against caste discrimination. He also worked to raise awareness about the issues facing Dalits.

In 2014, Azad co-founded the Bhim Army, a Dalit rights organization. The Bhim Army works to protect the rights of Dalits and to promote education and social justice. The organization has been involved in several protests and demonstrations, and it has also been accused of violence. The organization is working for Dalit emancipation through education. It runs free schools for Dalits in western Uttar Pradesh. They now run more than 300 schools across Saharanpur.

Azad has been arrested several times for his activism. In 2017, he was arrested for his role in the Saharanpur caste violence. In March 2016, some Dalit villagers put up a board at the entrance of Ghadkauli village that said ‘Da Great Chamar, Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Village, Ghadkauli, Welcomes You’. Thakurs objected to the words ‘Da Great’ before Chamar and the board was blackened. The Bhim Army was called and, after days of agitations, stone-pelting on police and lathicharge on Dalits, the board was erected again. This was when the Bhim Army and Aazad first attracted widespread attention.

He was released on bail after several months in prison. In 2020, he was arrested again for his alleged involvement in the violence that took place during the farmers' protest. He was released on bail after a few days.

While Aazad gained popularity for his proud assertion of Dalit identity and amid Mayawati’s BSP losing momentum, it has not so far translated to political gains.

Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Aazad had earlier said he would contest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi, but eventually gave support to the SP-BSP alliance.

In 2020, Azad launched a new political party, the Azad Samaj Party. The party's platform is based on the principles of social justice and equality for all. The party has contested several elections, but it has not yet won any seats in the legislature.

Chandrashekhar Azad is a controversial figure, but he is also a powerful voice for social change in India. He is a leading advocate for the rights of Dalits and other marginalized communities, and he has helped to raise awareness of the discrimination and violence that these communities face. He is a symbol of hope for those who believe in a more just and equitable India.

Chandrashekhar Azad has continued to be a vocal critic of the government and has called for social and economic reforms. He has also been critical of the caste system and has called for its abolition. In 2022, he was arrested again for his alleged involvement in the violence that took place during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act. He was released on bail after a few months in prison.

Recently Azad Ravan was shot at by unidentified assailants in the Deoband area of Saharanpur district in Uttar Pradesh on June 28, 2023 evening. He was taken to hospital and is reported to be stable

Despite the challenges he faces, Chandrashekhar Azad remains a committed activist and a passionate advocate for the rights of Dalits and other marginalized communities. He is a symbol of hope for those who believe in a more just and equitable India.
